Doris: Doris födelse

Gosta Lindborg has done a mashup of my head and a picture of the sun and used it as the header for his new blog.  I think the name of his blog is Doris, but I don’t read Swedish, so I’m not sure why.  Interestingly, I spent part of Thursday with a group of Swedish salespeople who were in Dallas for a visit.  I taught them to say “y’all”.  They taught me to say “oegggh”.  That’s what it sounds like anyway.  Apparently, it’s the sound you make when you both understand each other.  So, oegggh to you, Gosta.

Happy Memorial day

Posted on May 26th, 2008 in All This Useless Beauty,Living in Paradise by Mrs. Hall

We had a marvelously lazy day, capped off by some marvelous grilling.  I hit Central Market for jalapeno cheddar burgers and fluffy pain au lait for Mr. Hall.  I picked up pink key west shrimp, vidalia onions, poblano peppers, cherry tomatoes and zucchini for my kebabs.  The burger turned out great, piled here with some of the grilled onions:

My kebabs were fantastic.  I paired my food with some Vinos Pinol Ludovicus.  The Pinol’s have the best looking wine labels that I’ve ever seen.  And this very affordable wine is great with grilled food, so I’ll be having it again this summer.  And check out Wine Weekly’s Every Day Wine Blog.  It’s one of the best resources for the adventurous, yet budget conscious, wine drinker.

Now we are watching Sweeney Todd.  Ack……  Our other Netflix choices were Sleuth and the director’s cut of Blade Runner.  We thought we wanted something light.  Well, this is light alright.

Remembrance of Foods Past.

Memorial Day is the special day that Americans set aside to remember all the wonderful food that that they get to take picture of all year.  In that patriotic spirit, we have visited some of our favorite restaurants this weekend to pay our respects.  Friday night we went to Kavala and had steamed mussels, pita bread, sauteed broccolini, and Les had lamb souvlaki.  I was in a foul and argumentative mood, and so did not take any pictures.   In case you haven’t noticed, this is not a fun time to be in retail.  Or finance, or really any business that involves the dollar, consumers, products, or sales.  The only business that I can think of that might be flourishing right now is teaching people how to make their own gasoline. At this point, I don’t want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. I don’t want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed. You know, as a career, I don’t want to do that.

Saturday night, we went to our perennial favorite:  Hatties.  The appetizers were blue cheese stuffed figs wrapped in prosciutto and fried green tomatoes.  I had some bland halibut (trying to eat healthy), while Les had the butcher block pork chop.  Our dinner companions had the asiago basil pasta and the meat loaf.  And of course, we had to have a side of mac and cheese.  Then we finished off with molten chocolate cake, key lime pie and some pecan thing.  I couldn’t take pictures at Hattie’s because we were dining with some people that I work with and I try to act “normal” around them.  At least as much as I am capable of.

Fortunately, we have balanced our eating with lots of gardening and a massive garage cleaning project.  We have a three-car detached garage that is filled entirely with furniture that we can not agree to either have in the house or throw away.  Since we are planning to build a back porch AND install rolling barn doors in our living room this summer, Les needs a clean work space.  Hence, three days of intensive garage cleaning.  Very therapeutic.

Today, we went to El Jordan.  They have the very best home made chips and salsa ever made by a Mexican.  Then I had the chicken soft tacos, pictured above.  Actually, I could only eat one because I was so full of chips.  Les had these eggs, ham and potatoes:

Ham and Eggs

We had a great seat in the window facing Bishop.  While we were eating, this guy stood around, impatiently glancing at his cell phone.  He was wearing an undershirt, shorts, and black dress shoes.  His head was freshly shaven.  We surmise that he had been the victim of some kind of prank, or crime, that involved having his head shaved and his clothing stolen.  I guess you have to be careful who you pick up on a Saturday night in Oak Cliff.

I think there is a story here?

Tonight, we are watching Recount. How depressing. Who knows who is responsible for the expensive war, the credit crisis, recession, housing market crash, gas price inflation, food price inflation and general tanking of the dollar…. who knows. I’m sure I don’t know. But I surely was depressed that night almost eight years ago when Bush won the presidency of the United States.

Tomorrow, we’ll try to finish the garage. Today, I found about 8 boxes of underwear and socks that I haven’t seen in the two years that I have lived here. God only knows what we’ll find tomorrow when we get down to the 10th layer of detritus…

So Mr. Hall finished our porch columns last week, and they look marvelous! Now we are on to our next project. We have a built in section in one of our living room walls for our TV, stereo, etc. We are going to disguise the opening with sliding barn doors on vintage-style flat track hardware. Basically it will look like this, but with traditional black hanging hardware, and probably less gear on the actual doors. And there will be two doors that slide together to cover the TV, not just one.

Otherwise, it was an uneventful weekend. After I flew in from L.A., Philip and Craig came over for Chan Thai and Atonement. Awesome, beautifully shot film. Saturday, I got my hairs cut, and then we went hunting for barn doors and hardware at Oak Cliff Mercantile. But, turns out that Mr. Hall will probably make them, and we’ll just distress them with steel wool, BB guns, etc. to give them an aged appearance. Then we went to the new restaurant in the Centrum in Oak Lawn: Bengal Coast. We thought it was a real restaurant. Unfortunately, it was just a P.F. Chang’s “casual dining” clone. Meaning they took international cuisines that only the most backward of suburbanites would still consider adventurous and transformed them into something incredibly bland. We had some okay samosas:

Mr. Hall had the Beef Short Ribs:

and I had a totally fast-food worthy chicken wrap with “garam masala fries with curry aioli”. Meaning perfectly ordinary french fries dusted with season salt and dipped in green mayonnaise. Meh.

Sunday, I got the last of the plants for the backyard: A Red Abyssian Banana Plant, which has beautiful colors:

3 Mexican Fan Palms:

Plus a Dwarf Namwah Banana plant to go with the Red Banana Plant and the giant Aloe Vera, and loads of Vinca for the front beds. Hooray for gardening!

I love the way the sunset looks when the light hits the building across from the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza.  This is my view as I sip a glass of Beaulieu Vineyards Pinot Noir this evening on my balcony.  No food porn tonight as today was a very unexciting food day.  The Marriott served me Frosted Mini Wheats and papaya for breakfast, I picked at my chicken teriyaki at Kabuki, and it was a Hyatt Turkey Burger for dinner.  Meh.  Hey, at least the wine and the view is good.  Tomorrow, I’ll head down to Orange County, and maybe that side-trip to In N Out Burger.  Although my travel companion isn’t doing any carbs right now… maybe he can have it Protein Style.

Yujean Kang's

What a name, right?  I flew into Pasadena today.  After a nice man named Walter deposited me at the hotel, I walked around Old Town Pasadena, stopped in at Famima! (don’t you love the exclamation point!), and then dropped into Yujean Kang’s for some delicious authentic Chinese cuisine.  The walls of the restaurant are the most perfect red.  The picture makes it look orangey, but it was really a lovely pomegranate color.  I was one of only three tables.  I had some yummy dim sum:

And then the Tea Smoked Duck Salad.  Mmmmmm:

I’ll also get to visit L.A. and Orange County while I’m here this week.  Hopefully, more delightful food pics to come.  And if I can convince my travel companion, maybe a side trip to In ‘n Out Burger!  I owe a pal of mine a return visit, since I kind of dissed them the last time I was in L.A.

It's Summer…

judging by all the cute white pants at the Stevens Park Estates Block Party.  Our friend David played with his band, The B Street Blues Band.  And we saw his wife Janet, and our friends Darlis, Wally, Denis and Scott.  There was barbecue, a firetruck, and one of those inflatable bouncy houses for the kids.  And it was 93 degrees and 100% humidity.  Ah….. Summer! Pics of summery goodness are here.

Possumblossom

Posted on May 9th, 2008 in All This Useless Beauty,Living in Paradise by Mrs. Hall

finn2.jpg

So, I’m partly writing this post so that my last post will no longer be on the top of my blog. That’s some picture, isn’t it?

But also, so that you can look at this dog. She looks so innocent, so mild, doesn’t she? We used to call her Finn. But now we call her Possumblossom. And here’s why:

Last Monday, Mr. Hall took Angus and Finn out for their nightly perambulation, as usual. When they came back, he removed their leashes and went to his office. I have not moved from my seat in the living room. As Mr. Hall emerges from his office, I hear…”Oh. My. God.” Then total silence. “Don’t move. Don’t look.”

Okay…..

Apparently Finn found a possum, brought it into our living room, and ate it. Holy shit!!! So, Mr. Hall manfully cleans up poor, wee, dead possum. And when Finn throws up, well, he cleans that up too.

Tuesday night… one more dead possum…. but this time on the driveway, thank God. Um, let’s keep the dogs on a shorter leash, shall we?

Wednesday night… one more dead possum… apparently this one was committing suicide by Finn – just sitting on the driveway waiting for Finn to end its sad existence.

So, last night, I came home very late from work. It’s dark. I walk into the living room, pulling my laptop roller bag behind me. “Oh”, I say, “Finn has been tearing up a stuffed animal in the living room”. Then, it occurs to me… Finn doesn’t have any stuffed animals. I walk back into the kitchen, pulling my laptop roller bag and saying, “Oh. Oh. Oh”.

Les says, “What?”. I say, “It must be a stuffed animal, there is no blood, it must be a stuffed animal.” So, Mr. Hall manfully goes into the living room. Sure enough, It’s a dead possum. So… final tally: One possum family genocide, and Possumblossum gets a mouth check every time she comes into the house.

Happy Blogiversary

Posted on May 6th, 2008 in Girls Talk by Mrs. Hall

Today is the one year anniversary of my current blog.  Unfortunately, I’ll celebrate by writing a big check to the City Property Tax Collector.  We realized that they won’t answer your phone calls or your emails, or see you in person.  However, they will continue to send you bills with interest and penalties.  So, short of hiring an attorney, and it’s not THAT big of a check, we’re just going to give up.  And THIS is how I feel about that.
