Remembrance of Foods Past.
Memorial Day is the special day that Americans set aside to remember all the wonderful food that that they get to take picture of all year. In that patriotic spirit, we have visited some of our favorite restaurants this weekend to pay our respects. Friday night we went to Kavala and had steamed mussels, pita bread, sauteed broccolini, and Les had lamb souvlaki. I was in a foul and argumentative mood, and so did not take any pictures. In case you haven’t noticed, this is not a fun time to be in retail. Or finance, or really any business that involves the dollar, consumers, products, or sales. The only business that I can think of that might be flourishing right now is teaching people how to make their own gasoline. At this point, I don’t want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. I don’t want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed. You know, as a career, I don’t want to do that.
Saturday night, we went to our perennial favorite: Hatties. The appetizers were blue cheese stuffed figs wrapped in prosciutto and fried green tomatoes. I had some bland halibut (trying to eat healthy), while Les had the butcher block pork chop. Our dinner companions had the asiago basil pasta and the meat loaf. And of course, we had to have a side of mac and cheese. Then we finished off with molten chocolate cake, key lime pie and some pecan thing. I couldn’t take pictures at Hattie’s because we were dining with some people that I work with and I try to act “normal” around them. At least as much as I am capable of.
Fortunately, we have balanced our eating with lots of gardening and a massive garage cleaning project. We have a three-car detached garage that is filled entirely with furniture that we can not agree to either have in the house or throw away. Since we are planning to build a back porch AND install rolling barn doors in our living room this summer, Les needs a clean work space. Hence, three days of intensive garage cleaning. Very therapeutic.
Today, we went to El Jordan. They have the very best home made chips and salsa ever made by a Mexican. Then I had the chicken soft tacos, pictured above. Actually, I could only eat one because I was so full of chips. Les had these eggs, ham and potatoes:

We had a great seat in the window facing Bishop. While we were eating, this guy stood around, impatiently glancing at his cell phone. He was wearing an undershirt, shorts, and black dress shoes. His head was freshly shaven. We surmise that he had been the victim of some kind of prank, or crime, that involved having his head shaved and his clothing stolen. I guess you have to be careful who you pick up on a Saturday night in Oak Cliff.

Tonight, we are watching Recount. How depressing. Who knows who is responsible for the expensive war, the credit crisis, recession, housing market crash, gas price inflation, food price inflation and general tanking of the dollar…. who knows. I’m sure I don’t know. But I surely was depressed that night almost eight years ago when Bush won the presidency of the United States.
Tomorrow, we’ll try to finish the garage. Today, I found about 8 boxes of underwear and socks that I haven’t seen in the two years that I have lived here. God only knows what we’ll find tomorrow when we get down to the 10th layer of detritus…
