Another Bishop Arts Evening

Friday night, Les surprised me with dinner at The Place at Perry’s.  I’d never even heard of it, but it was a wonderful meal and a nice atmosphere.  After a Saturday of Costco, Target and napping, we went to Bishop Arts for Zen Sushi and a little bit of shopping.  Probably the best meal we’ve ever had there, and it’s always good.  I love this picture of our friends Janet and David walking across Bishop Avenue.  Next Friday… we’re off on vacation to Sonoma Valley and Mendocino!  Hooray!

Early Morning Walk

At Twelve Hills Nature Center.  I love the cartoonish quality of that sunflower.  My camera was accidentally set to overexpose from last night.  I thought it would ruin the pictures from this morning when I noticed it.  But it kind of gave them a bit of a glow!

Culinary Adventures

Posted on August 15th, 2009 in All This Useless Beauty,Living in Paradise by Mrs. Hall

Last week was a week that called for a margarita.  Or three.  We headed to Tio Joe’s for Mexican food and adult beverages Friday night.  Their frozen margaritas are the best…  And then we dropped by Hula Hotties for dessert.  An interesting little cafe.  An older gentlemen, maybe the owner, was playing Bungle in the Jungle.  Complete with flute and bongos.  Not sure we’ll make it back.  I haven’t been able to get that song out of my head since.

Tonight we went to Salum for date night.  Simply superb.  A lovely space, great service and very good food.  We started with Mussels and Pommes Frites.  Les had the Windy Farms Chicken and I had the Scallop Special.  We ended with Key Lime Creme Brulee.  Just lovely!  Now we’re watching more Mad Men episodes.  Why can’t we just drink and smoke the way our parents did?  It looks like so much fun!

My husband is such a talented photographer.  He finally posted his pictures from his boy’s weekend in Alpine.  They are beautiful.  Enjoy.  I hope I get to go visit Chet and Patty soon.  It looks gorgeous!

Park Henderson

Les and I went to Park for our date night tonight.  Not bad.  The food was good, but not outstanding.  Nice atmosphere though.  And the patio will be lovely when the weather cools down.  But we agreed that we would rather go to Bolsa, Nonna, Rise, or Neighborhood Services.  I had a Marsha, Marsha, Marsha! cocktail, which was fine.  We shared the queso, which was cold.  Then Les had the Flat Iron Chicken Fried Steak and I had the Scallops special.  Again, good, but nothing memorable.  Then we shared the Creme Brulee Special.  Now, that I could have eaten for days!  Overall though, I doubt we’ll make our way back.

Honk Honk!

Just hanging out in the Distribution Center today, serving ice water and cold towels to our hard working folks.  I get to ride around on this cute little cart, shout on a megaphone and beep the horn!

Tonight, we’re going to have dinner at Park, a hot new restaurant on Henderson.  Pictures will be forthcoming!

Another Simple Salad and a Vacation Update

Posted on August 5th, 2009 in All This Useless Beauty,Living in Paradise,Motel Matches by Mrs. Hall

This is  Simple Salad #1 from the NY Times 101 Simple Salads for the Season. I accidentally added red onion and serrano pepper because I started following a different salad recipe, but it really was outstanding anyway. I got all the ingredients from Sprouts, a new organic grocery store near the office. Maybe it’s my imagination, but I think everything actually tasted so much more delicious!  This salad consisted of watermelon, tomato, feta and balsamic vinaigrette…. with a glass of  Toad Hollow Pinot Noir Rose.  Toad Hollow is in Sonoma County so I chose it in honor of our upcoming vacation.  After getting an invitation from a friend with a beautiful home and vineyard in Sonoma, we altered our vacation plans.  We’re going to spend a few days with Ken and Jose in Cloverdale, several days in Sonoma at Bungalows 313 and several days in Mendocino on the coast at Headlands Inn.  Cheers!

101 Simple Salads for the Season

I’ve been saving the NY Times article on 101 Simple Salads for the Season.  We love salads, but get tired of the same ones over and over.  Number 2 looked pretty amazing so I dropped by Market Street and picked up some peaches, red onion and cilantro and threw it together with the baby tomatoes we got from Eden Creek Farm and some red pepper flakes we already had.  We added in a little left over pork tenderloin and dressed it with olive oil and lime juice.  Add a glass of champagne and voila,an amazing summer meal.  Maybe I should try all 101 and blog each one?

Sunday Dinner

Sunday Dinner

Les grilled this awesome pork tenderloin, and served it with haricot verte, sauteed rosemary new potatoes and a lovely Marquis de Gelida Cava Rose.  Cheers!  Now we’re watching Lone Star, one of my all-time favorite films.

Because You Can Never Have Too Much Bolsa

Posted on August 2nd, 2009 in All This Useless Beauty,Living in Paradise by Mrs. Hall

We went to brunch with Glenn and ate yummy breakfast pizza and steak with eggs.  Then we checked out the Bolsa farmer’s market where we bought onions, baby tomatoes, new potatoes and incredibly sweet Asian pears.  Les is cooking an immense pork tenderloin tonight… the potatoes will be perfect with that.  I just joined the Williams-Sonoma Wine Club, and I think there is a pork-appropriate wine in the latest batch.  Oops, no, already drunk it!  I was thinking of the Zwei 1 Zweigelt 2006.  But that’s gone.  Guess it will have to be the Fattoria I Veroni Rosso Di Toscana tonight.
