Thankful

A wonderful kick off to the holidays…

My creation

Wednesday night we had awesome Chinese food at Royal China. The shrimp dumplings are made at the dumpling bar and were so good. We also had Dry-stirred Beef and Phoenix and Dragon. I think it’s a new Thanksgiving-eve tradition.

How we have breakfast at our house

Thanksgiving Day, we hung around in our robes, watching the parade and some movies. We had Central Market Thanksgiving dinner, which was a little meh. Stephan Pyles didn’t do Thanksgiving takeout this year, unfortunately.

Christmas Tree

Mantel

The rest of the weekend was mainly spent decorating the house. We managed to eat at home almost every meal except for brunch at Smoke with the Goodings.

Happy Holidays!

Bruschetta at Bolsa

A advertising friend of mine who used to work for the Richards Group says that David Culp has coined a new term: BOB. Bent on Bolsa or Bolsa or Bust. He’s referring to the rabid following that the restaurant has developed. Well, great locavore food and wine, super atmosphere, outdoor seating and pet-friendly. What more could you ask for in a restaurant, especially one that is 1 mile from your house!

Desi at Bolsa

We didn’t bring Izzy this time, but Desi the Wheaton Terrier hung out with us for awhile. Now just two days to work until a five day Thanksgiving break. Hooray!

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

Finn

Mr. Hall was poorly this week, so I haven’t been out to dinner in SIX WHOLE DAYS! We did have champagne and Mr. Hall’s wonderful extra spicy chili on Friday and champagne and Eno’s awesome Southside pizza on Saturday, though. Today, Les was feeling better so we took the dogs on a nice walk. What a gorgeous day. 62 degrees and sunny. Now we’re going to Bolsa for snack and cocktails on their patio. And Thanksgiving is this week so I only work two days!!

La La Land

Palomar Bedroom

Went to LA for a very tony trip last week. I was meeting my CEO for a store tour. I got to stay at the LA Palomar in the above fabulous suite. My CEO stayed at the Peninsula, where I understand rooms are even more fabulous. I picked him up Saturday afternoon and when we pulled up, about ten men rushed to the car. I thought we were being carjacked. I’ve never seen so many staff just standing around. While I waited in the lobby, a harpist played and little bellmen in white suits and caps milled about. One bellman held a little poodle and took it outside to do it’s business. We went to the Polo Lounge for dinner with some of the managers from the area. The cocktails were superb, but it was very “old” Hollywood. I felt like I might see Merv Griffin or Zsa Zsa Gabor at any second. My only star sighting was waiting for a cab with Marcia Cross of Desperate Housewives. She is very pretty but so thin that I thought she was about to fall over and die. Her little legs were like wishbones encased in denim.

I flew back Sunday morning…. picked up by a limo, through the premium security lines and into the first class cabin.

You’ve come a long way, baby!

Something Different

Western Heights Cemetery

For once… not food pics. Went to Western Heights Cemetery this morning (Home of Clyde Barrow’s grave) to help clean up. Some of the headstones were so oblique. No names… or just initials, or “Father”. As Samuel Beckett said, “If I was dead, I wouldn’t know I was dead. That’s the only thing I have against death. I want to enjoy my death.”

So tonight we’ll go to Lumi to cheer up and end the existentialism. Last week it was French-Mexican cuisine, tonight we’re having Vietnamese-Brazilian food. What will they think of next?

Dog Heaven

Took the monster to Bolsa for the costume contest and doggie photographer. She was in heaven until too many dogs got there and she got shy.

Izzy and her new friend

All I can say is people are really into their dogs these days. :-)

Doggie Parade

Friday night we went to Soley!, the only French-Mexican restaurant I have ever heard of. Steak et Pomme Frites for Les and Mussels Los Soley for me. Truly superb! We’ll be back.

Mussels Los Soley

We went to Howard and Lisa’s for Halloween in an attempt to evade the strangely tall and deep-voiced Trick-or-Treaters that wander our neighborhood. Super menu: pork loin, sweet potatoes, roast brussel sprouts, and beets. Sadly, I brought neither my camera nor my iPhone, so it is one meal that shall go undocumented.

Today we’re going to walk the dogs at the Trinity River Levee.
